Territorians love to live in a uniquely Territorian style.
This means housing design that makes the most of the climate and the environment. This type of design is evident from the green leafy suburbs of Darwin and nearby Palmerston to the spectacular outback landscape and native gardens of Central Australia. In fact, the Northern Territory’s tropical architecture and arid-zone knowledge are recognised internationally.
Many houses in the Top End are elevated to capture the slightest breeze. Verandahs, decks and paved poolside areas encourage outdoor living, while big windows, louvres and ceiling fans maximise air flow. In Central Australia, many houses are single-storey Mediterranean style – just right for the warm dry days and cool crisp nights.
Housing prices
House and unit prices vary widely across the Northern Territory. If you’re selling a home in a southern city to come enjoy the terrific lifestyle in the Top End, you’ll find house prices compare favourably. The Real Estate Institute of the Northern Territory has more than thirty member agencies.
Household costs
Some household costs are slightly higher in the Northern Territory.
The smaller population and vast distances result in marginally higher grocery prices than in other parts of Australia. But you’ll probably find that you spend less on traveling around your community, or on parking and entry fees.
Many newcomers to the Top End of the Territory also notice they spend considerably less on winter clothing because of the warmer climate. And houses here are more likely to have a solar hot water system – that impacts on the bottom line of an electricity bill.
